A new bird species has just been officially described in Brazil — and you’ll get all the details of this extraordinary discovery here, firsthand! We are talking about the Sururina-da-serra (Tinamus resonans), a newly discovered tinamou found in the montane forests of Serra do Divisor, Acre. This bird stands out for its striking song, unique appearance, and surprising behavior, discovered thanks to the mystery of an unfamiliar sound recorded in 2021 that intrigued researchers and ornithologists.
The species is endemic to Serra do Divisor, living in a narrow strip of montane forest between Brazil and Peru. Estimates indicate there are only about 2,100 individuals in the wild, making the Sururina-da-serra one of the rarest birds in the country. Being terrestrial, tame, and a limited flier, it has earned the nickname “Brazilian Dodo”, in reference to the extinct bird from Mauritius. And like the dodo, it faces real threats: climate change, wildfires, and potential infrastructure projects that could endanger its habitat — which functions like an isolated island within the Amazon.
